1. fine,
smectitic, hyperthermic Typic Hapludert
(Lake Charles
series)
Texas
The Lake
Charles series consists of very deep, moderately
well drained, very slowly permeable soils formed
in clayey sediments on
broad coastal prairies. When dry, the soil has
cracks 1/2 to 2 inches wide at the surface that
extend to a depth of 12 inches or more. Cracks
remain open for 60 to 90 cumulative days in most
years. Slickensides begin at a depth of 10 to 20
inches and extend throughout the B horizon.
Permeability is very slow. Water enters the soil
rapidly when cracked, but very slow when wet and
cracks are closed. These soils are mainly in
cultivation and native pasture. Crops include
corn, cotton, rice, and grain sorghum.
