(Dothan
series)
The distinguishing feature of this Georgia soil is the subsoil plinthite
found in the lower part of the profile. Plinthite is commonly found
in Ultisols developed on older, stable landscapes and is characterized by pattern of dark red redox concentrations and gray depletions. Through repeated
wetting and drying cycles, plinthite can harden irreversibly to
ironstone hardpans or aggregates.
