3. Orthel
northern Alaska

This soil, from the coastal tundra of northern Alaska, contains permafrost below 38 cm. Limited microbial activity resulting from cold temperatures leads to significant accumulation of organic matter. In this profile, a buried organic horizon is present above the permafrost.
