These soils
are extensive on old erosional uplands in
northcentral Texas and southcentral Oklahoma.
Average annual precipitation is 26-32" and
mean annual temperature is ~62-66 °F.
A and E horizon textures range from loamy very fine sand to fine sandy loam. Texture of
the red argillic Bt horizon is clay, sandy clay, or clay
loam with ~40% clay.
Native vegetation is post oak and blackjack
oak trees with a ground cover of little bluestem,
greenbrier, and annual grasses. Most Windthorst
soils are in pastures of bermudagrass or in
rangeland. Some areas are cultivated, with
peanuts, sorghums, and small grains the main
crops.
