 Objectives:
• To become familiar with the structure of common soil minerals and their chemical and physical properties;
• To develop an understanding of the general distribution of minerals in soils/sediments and how it is influenced by environmental conditions;
• To learn some of the basic techniques and procedures used for mineralogical characterization of soils and sediments.

Grading System:
Course grades will be based on the following criteria:
mid-term exam – 25% of course grade
final exam – 25% of course grade
lab write-ups – 50% of course grade

Letter grades are assigned as follows:
A = (90-100%) = excellent
B = (80-89%) = good
C = (70-79%) = average
D = (60-69%) = below-average
F = (<60%) = unsatisfactory
