Pesticides fate in Costa Rica

Pesticide fates in tropical ecosystems have received little attention, despite the fact that large amounts of synthetic organics are used on export crops. The main objective of this project is to determine if pesticides applied to plantain and banana represent a threat to the environment. Soil and water samples are being screened for pesticide residues in an attempt to delineate the extent of any problem. Preliminary results have repeatedly detected several different types of pesticides in local water resources in the Talamanca region of Costa Rica including difenoconazole, diuron, terbufos and chlorpyrifos. Our overall goal is to produce an assessment of ecological risk from pesticide use in this tropical environment.
